Did I Miss Anything?

When Billy Collins was the United States Poet Laureate, he encouraged schools to read a poem a day: no analysis, no writing assignments, only the pure nourishment of experiencing a poem. See him at Poetry 180. Isn’t that a wonderful title? Students get about 180 days of school, and a 180 degree shift in how most of them have experienced poetry in the past.

Here’s one for all students who ask, “Did I miss anything?”

  1. Collins is an awesome poet, and the project was great, too. Yes, the horrible thing that happens with most poetry is that it is “taught” rather than appreciated. A poem should not mean but be (which is not to say it can’t have a lot of meaning!)
