When Billy Collins was the United States Poet Laureate, he encouraged schools to read a poem a day: no analysis, no writing assignments, only the pure nourishment of experiencing a poem. See him at Poetry 180. Isn’t that a wonderful title? Students get about 180 days of school, and a 180 degree shift in how most of them have experienced poetry in the past.
Here’s one for all students who ask, “Did I miss anything?”
Tom Wayman’s poem, Did I Miss Anything?
Collins is an awesome poet, and the project was great, too. Yes, the horrible thing that happens with most poetry is that it is “taught” rather than appreciated. A poem should not mean but be (which is not to say it can’t have a lot of meaning!)
