Punctuation Day?!

Question Mark in Lucida Blackletter gold, created by authorHappy Punctuation Day. This is no holy day for editors. In fact, accurate and effective punctuation is probably the least of our talents and the most common way to underestimate our profession. (A potential client once told me his book was perfect. He only needed me to put the commas in the right places. I declined the honor.)

Furthermore, today is also Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, which clearly eclipses Punctuation Day in history, significance, and number of observants. Perhaps, though, I could repent of the past year’s typos and fast from typing all marks except periods and commas. And parentheses. (This is more challenging than one might think.)
Which punctuation marks would you be lost without?
